Ninove is a historic city in the province of East Flanders, idyllically situated on the banks of the Dender River and belonging to the easy on the eye Denderland region. The origins of the city are closely linked to the founding of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Ninove in the 12th century, which dominated the religious and economic life of the region for centuries. The majestic Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, the former Baroque abbey church, still bears witness today, with its magnificent interior, to the enormous wealth of this monastic past. In the 19th century, Ninove transformed into an important industrial center due to the flourishing match and textile industries. Today, the city is known for its exuberant carnival, one of the largest in Flanders, which takes place on the first Sunday of Lent, as well as for the distinctive "Oud Stadhuis" (Old Town Hall) on the central market square.
