Castle of Chevremont (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Chèvremont was a strategically vital fortress situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Vesdre valley near Liège. Its origins trace back to the Roman era, and during the Early Middle Ages, it served as a crucial defensive bastion for the surrounding territory. In the 10th century, the castle became a center of resistance against the expanding power of the Prince-Bishops of Liège. The fortress was famously destroyed in 987 following a long siege by Notger, the first Prince-Bishop of Liège, to firmly establish his regional authority. Following its demolition, the site lost its military function and evolved into a place of religious significance. Today, the location features the ruins of ancient walls alongside a 19th-century basilica, serving as a prominent pilgrimage site and a point of interest for medieval history.
