Citadel of Liège (Belgium)

Weather…

The Citadel of Liège sits strategically atop the Montagne de Bueren, overseeing the city from a height that has been fortified since the 13th century. Most of the structure visible today was constructed under Dutch rule between 1817 and 1823 as part of a defensive strategy to secure the southern borders against France. Historically, the site was the scene of dramatic events, including the 1468 destruction by Charles the Bold's forces, which leveled the city's previous defenses. During the 20th-century World Wars, the citadel served as military barracks and later as a detention facility, only being decommissioned for civilian use in the post-war era. Nowadays, large sections of the massive ramparts and bastions have been converted into a public park, famous for its sweeping views of the Meuse valley. While part of the grounds is occupied by a modern hospital complex, the surviving masonry remains a testament to 19th-century military engineering.
