The steelworks of Seraing form the historical backbone of Walloon heavy industry and were once the cradle of the industrial revolution on the European mainland. Founded in the 19th century by pioneer John Cockerill, the industrial district rapidly expanded into a massive complex of blast furnaces and rolling mills that decisively shaped Belgium's economic development. Today, significant portions of the facilities belong to global players like the ArcelorMittal group, focusing increasingly on highly specialized steel solutions utilized in the automotive and construction industries. The structural changes of recent decades have presented challenges for Seraing, yet through technological innovation and initiatives for economic diversification, the site continues to maintain its relevance. Concurrently, abandoned industrial wastelands are increasingly being transformed into modern technology parks and cultural centers.
