Svetlahorsk is a major industrial city located in southeastern Belarus within the Homel Region, situated on the right bank of the Berezina River. The city evolved from the historical village of Shatsila, first recorded in 1560 as part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Modern urban development accelerated in the 1950s following the construction of a thermal power plant and the establishment of large-scale chemical industries. In 1961, the settlement was granted city status and renamed Svetlahorsk, meaning 'city of light.' Economically, it remains a vital hub for the Belarusian economy, specializing in the production of chemical fibers and wood pulp. Beyond its industrial significance, the city features cultural landmarks such as the Museum of Local Lore and various memorials dedicated to the victims of World War II. Its location on the Berezina River provides scenic waterfronts and access to the extensive forest landscapes of the Polesie region.
