Skidal, conveniently positioned on the main highway connecting Grodno and Minsk, is a dynamic small city whose existence is deeply tied to agricultural processing. The city is best known as one of the primary centers of the Belarusian sugar industry. In the 1950s, the country's very first large-scale sugar refinery was established here; it remains the region's largest employer to this day, supplying sugar to vast areas of western Belarus. Alongside the massive industrial facility that anchors the cityscape, Skidal retains a characterful historical core, highlighted by a striking Neo-Gothic Catholic church and the remnants of the old Antoniwicz noble estate. The Kotra River, which flows through the city, provides pleasant recreational opportunities amidst its surrounding woodlands.
