Saint Nicholas Monastery (Mogilev) (Belarus)

Weather…

The Saint Nicholas Orthodox Convent in Mogilev is a remarkable architectural ensemble and one of the finest surviving examples of a unique regional style known as 'Belarusian Baroque'. Founded in the 17th century, the monastery complex is dominated by the magnificent St. Nicholas Church, which was consecrated in 1672. The exterior facade impresses with its multi-tiered, richly ornamented design and striking blue onion domes. However, the church's greatest treasure is hidden inside: a panoramic, four-story-high wooden carved iconostasis dating back to the 17th century. This masterpiece of woodcarving is covered in intricate, gilded floral motifs and ranks among the most valuable artistic and historical artifacts in Belarus. Historically, the monastery had close ties with the Russian imperial family; Tsar Nicholas II frequently attended religious services here while his military headquarters were stationed in Mogilev during World War I.
