Bykhaw Castle and Synagogue (Belarus)

Weather…

Bykhaw, strategically located on the right bank of the Dnieper River, developed into one of the strongest fortified towns in Eastern Europe in the 17th century. The powerful Lithuanian Hetman Jan Karol Chodkiewicz began the construction of the impressive Bykhaw Castle in 1610, designing it as an impregnable citadel. The residence combined luxurious palatial elements with strong defensive bastions and thick walls, which were later further reinforced by the Sapieha family. Another outstanding monument of the town is the Main Synagogue, built around the same time. This fortified synagogue, equipped with cylindrical corner towers and walls nearly two meters thick, provided protection to the Jewish community during numerous sieges, such as the catastrophic Cossack uprising in 1654. Today, the massive ruins of the castle and the unique architecture of the synagogue are valuable relics that testify to the warlike and multicultural past of Bykhaw.
