Dobrush, located just a few kilometers from Gomel and the Russian border, is a city whose destiny and physical landscape have been indelibly shaped by water and industry. Situated on the sprawling, island-forming branches of the Iput River, it is often affectionately dubbed the 'city of bridges,' with over a dozen bridges connecting its various districts. The absolute economic engine of the city is the legendary 'Hero of Labor' Paper Mill, established in the late 19th century. This massive historical facility, featuring imposing red-brick buildings right along the riverbanks, is not only a premier monument of industrial architecture but remains the city's most vital employer. Despite the environmental impact of the Chernobyl disaster on the surrounding region, Dobrush preserves its unique character as a hardworking, canal-laced industrial town.
