Vyetka, situated on the Sozh River in the Gomel Region, is a small town with a unique and profoundly spiritual history. In the late 17th century, the town was founded by Russian Old Believers fleeing severe religious persecution in Tsarist Russia. This isolation and intense religious devotion transformed Vyetka into the most important spiritual and cultural center for Old Believers in Eastern Europe for centuries. This incredibly rich heritage is meticulously preserved today at the Vyetka Museum of Old Believer Culture and Belarusian Traditions, which houses a memorable collection of rare ancient icons, illuminated manuscripts, and traditional textiles. Tragically, the town and its surroundings were heavily contaminated by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster fallout, leading to a significant population decline, yet it remains an invaluable sanctuary of sacred art.
