Halshany Castle (Belarus)

Weather…

Halshany Castle, a magnificent residence from the first half of the 17th century, was commissioned by Paweł Stefan Sapieha, Vice-Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The complex was once an architectural masterpiece in the Flemish Renaissance style, featuring a closed, rectangular layout with a spacious inner courtyard flanked by four elegant hexagonal corner towers. In addition to luxurious living quarters, the castle housed a valuable collection of paintings. However, due to wars and neglect in the 18th and 19th centuries, the building fell into visible disrepair. Today, the photogenic ruins are famous nationwide for their mystical atmosphere, which inspired the Belarusian author Uladzimir Karatkevich to write his famous detective novel, The Black Castle of Halshany. Since 2018, a comprehensive state program has been underway to stabilize the ruins and partially restore the North Tower.
