Surroundings of the old synagogue

A peaceful and historically reflective area.

Bykhaw, strategically positioned on the high right bank of the Dnieper River in the Mogilev Region, is a city that for centuries was renowned as one of the most impenetrable fortresses in Eastern Europe. The history of the settlement is dominated by the massive Bykhaw Castle, a key bastion of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that was transformed by the powerful Sapieha noble family into a modern, artillery-ready citadel. Its thick defensive walls famously withstood brutal sieges during the Cossack uprisings and the Great Northern War. Another remarkable testament to its fortified past is the early 17th-century Great Synagogue, a rare example of a fortified synagogue designed to be fully integrated into the city's defense system during times of siege. Although the castle and synagogue are partially in ruins today, Bykhaw's streets still echo the grandeur of its formidable military and multicultural legacy.
