Budslau Basilica (Belarus)

Weather…

The National Sanctuary of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Budslau is the most important spiritual center for the Catholic Church in Belarus and a magnificent monument of Late Baroque architecture. The imposing basilica was constructed in its current form between 1767 and 1783 by Bernardine monks, skillfully incorporating older 17th-century structures. The church's lavish interior is particularly famous for its wide-open trompe-l'œil (illusionistic) frescoes, which captivate viewers with their remarkable three-dimensional depth. The greatest and most sacred treasure of the basilica, however, is the venerated, wonder-working Budslau Icon of the Mother of God, traditionally believed to have been gifted by Pope Clement VIII in 1598. Every summer, tens of thousands of pilgrims travel on foot from across the country and abroad to visit the shrine, a massive religious gathering that was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2018.
