Ganja, with more than three hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants, is Azerbaijan's second-largest city and lies picturesquely at the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus on the river of the same name. The city was the birthplace of the great Persian-Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi (1141-1209), whose mausoleum today is one of the most important landmarks. In 1918 Ganja briefly served as the provisional capital of the first Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Highlights include the seventeenth-century Shah Abbas Mosque, the Juma Caravanserai and the unusual Bottle House built in the 1960s, whose façade consists of thousands of glass bottles. Economically the city is dominated by aluminium, textile and food industries, as well as viticulture and winemaking in the fertile surrounding plains.
