Rustavi Metallurgical Plant (Georgia)

Weather…

The Rustavi Metallurgical Plant is the largest industrial center in the Caucasus, located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Tbilisi. The founding of the plant in 1944 marked the birth of the city of Rustavi, which was specifically designed as a residential settlement for steelworkers. Geographically, the facility benefits from its proximity to the Kura River and excellent railway connections to Azerbaijan. Rustavi was built as a fully integrated plant, handling everything from pig iron production to finished steel pipes. During its peak in the Soviet Union, the plant employed tens of thousands of people and stood as a symbol of socialist progress. Following the collapse of the USSR, the plant underwent difficult periods of privatization and restructuring. Today, it is operated by Rustavi Steel and focuses on producing seamless pipes and rebar for export. Ecological challenges resulting from decades of heavy industry are increasingly being addressed in modern urban planning. However, the plant remains the most significant employer in the Kvemo Kartli region.
