Gobustan Rock Art (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The rock art of Gobustan is an extraordinary testament to human history and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The reserve is located about 60 kilometers southwest of Baku on the edge of the Caucasus Mountains. It features over 6,000 petroglyphs covering a timespan of nearly 40,000 years, from the Late Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. The engravings depict scenes from the daily lives of early inhabitants, including hunting, ritual dances, animals such as gazelles and wild horses, and striking depictions of reed boats. These boat carvings provided researcher Thor Heyerdahl with evidence for his theories on early maritime links between the Caspian Sea and Scandinavia. In addition to the rock art, the area is home to the Gaval Dash, a natural resonant stone that sounds like a drum, likely used during ritual ceremonies. The dry semi-desert landscape with its massive limestone boulders has protected these artworks for millennia. Today, a modern on-site museum has deep insights into the prehistoric culture and archaeological findings of the region.
