Lankaran sits on the southern Caspian shore only about twenty kilometres from the Iranian border and is the economic and cultural centre of the subtropical Talysh region. With its humid subtropical climate, more than eighteen hundred hours of sunshine a year and abundant rainfall, the surrounding plain is good for cultivating tea, rice, citrus fruits and spices. The city itself has around seventy-five thousand inhabitants, mostly ethnic Talysh, whose Iranian-rooted language and culture shape the region. Highlights include the nineteenth-century Khan's Palace, the old Tsarist-era prison and Hirkan National Park with its ancient relict forests, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. The hot mineral springs of Istisu have been a popular healing destination for generations of visitors.
