Javad Khan Mausoleum (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Javad Khan Mausoleum in Ganja is a memorial dedicated to the last ruler of the Ganja Khanate, who died in 1804 during the Russian siege of the city. The current structure was built in 2005 in the traditional Azerbaijani style, using red brick characteristic of Ganja's architecture. The mausoleum is located in the historical center of the city, right next to the magnificent 17th-century Juma Mosque. It has a square plan and is decorated with an ornamental dome and artistic inscriptions in Arabic script. Javad Khan is considered in Azerbaijan as a symbol of independence and courage, as he refused to surrender the city to Russian troops without a fight. The monument was erected exactly on the spot where his remains were identified during archaeological excavations. Today, the mausoleum is a site of national pride and an important destination for visitors to the city.
