Karahunj (Armenia)

Weather…

Karahunj, also known as Zorats Karer, is a prehistoric archaeological site in the Syunik Province, often referred to as the 'Armenian Stonehenge.' The complex comprises approximately 223 large basalt stones, some standing up to 2.8 meters tall and weighing as much as 10 tons. A defining characteristic of the site is the presence of precisely bored holes in about 80 of the stones, leading many scholars to believe it functioned as one of the world's oldest astronomical observatories. While most archaeologists date the site to the Bronze Age, some controversial estimates suggest parts of it may date back to the 6th millennium BC. Beyond its celestial purpose, Karahunj served as a significant burial ground, as evidenced by the numerous stone-box graves found across the plateau. The stones are arranged in circular and linear patterns, suggesting a sophisticated knowledge of ritual practices and cosmic alignments. Today, it is a key destination for researchers in archaeoastronomy and history enthusiasts.
