Vorotan Cascade (Armenia)

Weather…

The Vorotan Cascade is a key hydroelectric complex located on the Vorotan River in Armenia's southern Syunik Province. It consists of three individual hydroelectric power plants: Spandaryan, Shamb, and Tatev. Construction of the cascade began in the Soviet era in the 1960s and was completed by the late 1980s. With a total installed capacity of over 400 MW, it is one of the largest power generating facilities in the country. The cascade harnesses the significant elevation drop of the Vorotan River as it flows through the rugged canyons of Syunik. The three plants are interconnected by a system of reservoirs, tunnels, and pipelines to optimize water flow and maximize power generation. The Vorotan Cascade is a major source of renewable energy for Armenia and plays a critical role in stabilizing the national power grid. In 2015, the complex was acquired by the American company ContourGlobal, marking the largest single US investment in Armenia. This acquisition led to significant modernization and refurbishment work, improving the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the aging Soviet-era assets.
