Lake Çıldır is a large freshwater lake in northeastern Turkey, situated on the border of Ardahan and Kars provinces. Located at an impressive altitude of 1,959 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest lakes in the country. The lake's formation is attributed to volcanic activity that blocked the drainage of a natural basin. Lake Çıldır is best known for its winter transformation; from December to April, the surface often freezes to a thickness of up to one meter. During this time, local fishermen continue centuries-old traditions by ice fishing with nets through holes drilled in the ice. The lake contains several islands featuring the ruins of medieval churches and fortifications, reflecting a long history of human settlement in this rugged and remote frontier region.

Lake Çıldır is located in northeastern Turkey and is best accessed from the cities of Ardahan or Kars. Roads are generally navigable, though in winter, one must be prepared with special equipment due to significant snowfall.

Winter is the most fascinating time, when the lake freezes over completely, allowing for horse-drawn sleigh rides and ice fishing. In summer, the cool high-altitude air provides a pleasant escape from the heat of lower regions.

The shoreline is flat to undulating, situated on a high plateau at over 1,900 meters. The vast, open landscape is lush and green in summer, while in winter it vanishes under a thick snow cover, offering an almost arctic scenery.

In winter, extremely warm clothing, thermal base layers, and sturdy, insulated footwear are absolutely necessary. For summer, visitors should pack a light jacket for the cooler evenings on the plateau despite the daytime sun.

Parking spaces are mostly found near the fish restaurants along the shore or in the adjacent small villages. In winter, areas right by the lake are often cleared to facilitate visitor access to activities on the ice.

In winter, you should only venture onto the ice in designated areas and follow the instructions of locals. Due to the high altitude and extreme cold, it is vital to watch for signs of hypothermia and never stray too far from safety.
