Historical site
The Sanctuary of Meritxell is the spiritual heart of Andorra. The original Romanesque chapel, which housed a revered 12th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, was tragically destroyed by fire in 1972. In its place, the renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill designed a modern, eclectic sanctuary that was inaugurated in 1976. The new complex is a fusion of different styles, with arches, towers, and the use of black and white materials to represent the Pyrenean landscape of rock and snow. It contains a replica of the Romanesque statue that was lost in the fire. The sanctuary is part of the 'Marian Route', connecting several important shrines in Spain and France, and it was granted the title of Minor Basilica by Pope Francis in 2014.

Visiting
The Sanctuary of Meritxell is the most important religious centre in Andorra and can be visited free of charge. The basilica and the adjacent museum are open to visitors, the interior is accessible.
Typical hours
The sanctuary is typically open daily from 9:00 to 18:00, with extended hours in summer months. During services, visitor access may be limited.
Photography
Photography is allowed in the basilica without flash, out of respect for worshippers during Mass. Outside, the surrounding landscape and architecture offer great photo subjects.
Time needed
Allow about 45 minutes to 1 hour for visiting the basilica and museum. Those who also want to explore the chapel and outdoor area should add another half hour.
Combine with
Combine your visit with a hike in the surrounding Pyrenees or a trip to the nearby old town of Ordino. The Casa de la Vall in Andorra la Vella is also worth a trip.
Getting there
The sanctuary is located in Meritxell, about 6 km from Andorra la Vella. It is accessible by car via the main road CG-2, with regular public buses from the capital.
Insider tip
Visit the sanctuary early in the morning to enjoy the peace and avoid crowds. The adjacent souvenir shop sells local craft products and religious keepsakes.
