Meritxell serves as the spiritual heart of Andorra, housing the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Meritxell, the nation's patron saint. The original Romanesque sanctuary was expanded in the 17th century but suffered a catastrophic fire on September 8, 1972, which nearly destroyed the entire structure. In its place, the acclaimed Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill designed a new, avant-garde sanctuary that was inaugurated in 1976. The architectural design fuses modernism with traditional slate construction, symbolizing the resilience and reconstruction of the Andorran identity. Inside, a replica of the original 12th-century Romanesque statue of the Virgin is enshrined. The site also features the old parish house, now a museum documenting the sanctuary's history. Every year on September 8th, Andorra's national day, thousands of pilgrims visit the site, which was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica in 2014.
