Libohovë Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Libohovë Castle was constructed between 1796 and 1798 by the powerful regional ruler Ali Pasha Tepelena. He commissioned the fortress as a grand wedding gift for his sister, Shanisha, following her marriage into the prominent local Libohova noble family. The castle features a nearly square layout with four massive polygonal corner towers, characteristic of Ottoman military architecture during that period. Positioned at the foot of Bureto Mountain, it provides a wide vantage point over the Drino Valley. Unlike many other regional fortresses, Libohovë Castle primarily functioned as a stately residence and a center of power for the Libohova family rather than a strictly military outpost. The walls were built using high-quality local stone, reflecting superior craftsmanship. Below the castle stands the famous ancient plane tree of Libohovë, a designated natural monument providing shade for centuries. Today, while the interior structures have largely perished, the exterior walls and bastions remain significant landmarks of southern Albanian history and the legacy of Ali Pasha's dynasty.
