Zall-Gjoçaj National Park (Albania)

Weather…

The former Zall-Gjoçaj National Park is located in northern Albania within the Mat region, originally covering an area of about 140 hectares before being integrated into the larger Lura-Mali i Dejës National Park in 2018. Despite its small size, the area is considered one of the country's most valuable biodiversity hotspots. The landscape is characterized by rugged mountain ranges, crystal-clear streams, and dense coniferous forests dominated by Black pine and Bosnian pine. The area was protected in 1996 to safeguard untouched high-mountain ecosystems and endangered wildlife. Geologically, the region consists of a mix of limestone and igneous rocks, resulting in spectacular geomorphology with numerous caves and springs. The park serves as a sanctuary for brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and chamois. Due to its relative inaccessibility, Zall-Gjoçaj is a paradise for researchers and experienced hikers. Its inclusion in the Lura network aims to improve ecological continuity and strengthen the protection of high-mountain flora.
