Korab Peak (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Golem Korab, standing at 2764 meters, is the highest peak in both North Macedonia and Albania. The Korab massif in the northwest of the country is defined by alpine terrain, rugged rock formations, and deep glacial valleys. The region is part of the Mavrovo National Park and is characterized by exceptional biodiversity, featuring numerous endemic plant species. Geologically, the peak is primarily composed of limestone and schists, which have created spectacular steep cliffs. Historically, the Korab Mountains marked a significant border between different cultural spheres of influence in the Western Balkans. Climbing to the summit is one of the region's most challenging yet popular hikes, with an international mountaineering event held every September. From the top, an impressive panorama stretches over the Šar Mountains and the Albanian Alps.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Ascending the highest peak in the country typically starts from the village of Strezimir or nearby border posts. The approach requires navigating rough mountain roads to reach the primary trailheads.
📅
Best season
Summer and early autumn (July to September) are the safest and most popular times for an ascent. Snow cover is heavy and long-lasting, rendering winter and spring ascents suitable only for expert mountaineers.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The ascent involves demanding alpine terrain, including steep grassy slopes, rocky ridges, and exposed sections near the summit. The 2764-meter climb requires excellent physical endurance.
🎒
What to bring
Professional-grade alpine hiking boots, multiple weather-resistant clothing layers, and trekking poles are mandatory. Ample food, water, and reliable navigation tools are absolutely essential for this expedition.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is typically found near the local border police station or at informal clearings where the drivable road ends. Facilities are virtually non-existent, so secure your vehicle responsibly.
⚠️
Safety
As a high-altitude border peak, registering with border police before your hike may be required or highly recommended. Beware of rapid weather changes, high winds, and precipitous drops near the top.
⏱️
Time needed
Climbing to the summit and returning to the trailhead is a strenuous full-day commitment. Hikers should start very early and expect the round trip to take anywhere from 8 to 12 hours.
