Kabwe, formerly known as Broken Hill, is the provincial capital of the Central Province in Zambia, situated approximately 140 kilometers north of Lusaka. Founded in 1902 following the discovery of vast lead and zinc deposits, it holds the distinction of being Zambia's first modern mining town. The city sits at an elevation of 1,180 meters on the central plateau and serves as a critical railway hub connecting the capital to the Copperbelt region. Historically, Kabwe gained global fame in 1921 when the skull of 'Broken Hill Man' (Homo heidelbergensis) was discovered in a local mine, providing a landmark find for the study of human evolution. While the mines closed in 1994, the industrial legacy has resulted in significant environmental challenges due to heavy lead contamination, prompting ongoing international remediation efforts. Today, Kabwe is diversifying its economy through commercial farming and trade, while remaining a key administrative and transport link for the country.
