Livingstone Memorial Chitambo (Zambia)

Weather…

The Livingstone Memorial in Chitambo marks the historic site where the renowned Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone died on May 1, 1873. At the time of his death, Livingstone was on his final expedition, searching for the source of the Nile River. Following his passing, his heart was buried under a Mpundu tree by his loyal companions, Chuma and Susi, before his body was embalmed and carried on a grueling eight-month journey to the coast for transport to England. The original tree, into which an inscription had been carved, decayed in the late 19th century, leading to the construction of a permanent stone and concrete obelisk in 1902. Located in the remote Bangweulu Wetlands, the memorial is now a protected National Monument of Zambia. It serves as a profound symbol of 19th-century exploration and the deep respect held for Livingstone by both the local people and the international community.
