The Luangwa Wildlife Sanctuary in eastern Zambia is globally celebrated as one of Africa's last truly wild safari destinations. The ecosystem is defined by the Luangwa River, which creates a shifting landscape of oxbow lakes and seasonal lagoons through its natural meandering and annual floods. These permanent waters support some of the highest concentrations of hippos and crocodiles in the world, while the lush riverine vegetation attracts large herds of elephants, Cape buffalo, and endemic Thornicroft's giraffes. The sanctuary is particularly famous for its high density of leopards, offering unparalleled opportunities for sightings of these elusive predators. Historically, South Luangwa was the pioneer site for 'walking safaris,' a concept introduced by conservationist Norman Carr in the 1950s to promote immersive and ethical wildlife viewing. The lack of fencing allows for unrestricted wildlife movement between the park and surrounding Game Management Areas. Today, the sanctuary is the primary economic engine for the region, providing vital employment and funding for local community development projects.

Best season

The dry season from May to October gives the best sightings as animals concentrate along the rivers. Giraffes, zebras and various antelope species are especially easy to observe then.

Best time of day

The early morning hours are good for witnessing animals' first activities of the day. The evening twilight is also a good time for encounters with nocturnal species.

Etiquette

Keep a safe distance from wildlife and remain inside the vehicle during game drives. Avoid noise and sudden movements to avoid stressing the animals.

What to bring

Binoculars with 8x to 10x magnification are well-suited for identifying animals in the open savannah. Sunscreen, hat and plenty of water should always be carried.

Getting there

The sanctuary lies near the Mfuwe Gate in the southern Luangwa Valley. It is best accessed via the town of Mfuwe, from where guided tours are offered.

Be prepared that some species appear only rarely, especially the endangered ones. Enjoy the tranquillity of nature and use the time for landscape photography.
