Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb (Yemen)

Weather…

Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb, standing at an altitude of 3,666 meters, is the highest mountain in Yemen and the highest peak on the entire Arabian Peninsula. Located in the western highlands, about 30 kilometers west of the capital Sana'a, it belongs to the Sarawat mountain range. The mountain's name honors the Prophet Shu'ayb, to whom a shrine is dedicated on the summit, serving as a significant religious destination for local pilgrims. Geologically, the mountain consists mainly of volcanic rock, and its slopes are characterized by impressive, millennia-old terraces where agriculture is practiced despite the extreme altitude. The summit has a strategic vantage point over the central highlands and is frequently used for military and communication purposes, which is why public access can be restricted. The climate on Jabal An-Nabi Shu'ayb is alpine in character, with temperatures often dropping below freezing in winter and occasionally allowing for snowfall. For geographers and mountaineers, it is a symbol of Yemen's vertical diversity, standing in stark contrast to the country's vast desert expanses.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The highest mountain in the country is accessible via mountain roads west of Sanaa, which can be very steep and unpaved in sections. Using a 4WD vehicle with an experienced driver is highly advisable for this route.
📅
Best season
The summer months are pleasantly cool but can also bring clouds and fog, while winter is generally dry and sunny. Regardless of the season, temperatures at the summit often drop below freezing at night.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
At an elevation of over 3,660 meters, the terrain is rocky and the vegetation is sparse. The ascent gives spectacular views of the terraced fields in the surrounding valleys and Yemen's vast mountain ranges.
🎒
What to bring
As the air is thinner, you should pace yourself physically and drink plenty of water. Bring heavy jackets and hats to protect yourself from the strong wind and cold experienced at these extreme elevations.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles can be parked at designated stopping points along the road to the summit or in the nearest village. As space is limited, care should be taken not to obstruct other road users or local traffic.
⚠️
Safety
Due to the extreme altitude, slow acclimatization is important to avoid headaches. Note that emergency services in this remote mountain region are very limited, so extra caution is advised during your visit.
⏱️
Time needed
For the entire trip from Sanaa, you should plan a full day to enjoy the altitude and the views without time pressure. The pure driving time often amounts to several hours each way due to the road conditions.
