💡 Tips

Buy small bags of dried Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and sage from local small shops.

Zaglav is a photogenic coastal settlement on the eastern side of Dugi Otok island. For many travelers, it is the first point of contact with the island as it serves as the docking point for fast ferries from Zadar. The village hosts the only boat fuel station in the entire Zadar archipelago, making it a strategic hub for sailors. Despite its logistical importance, Zaglav has preserved its quiet, insular atmosphere. Culturally, the 15th-century Franciscan monastery of the Third Order, dedicated to St. Mary, stands out. The monastery church is a significant monument of Gothic and Renaissance styles on the island. Every August, the Feast of St. Mary is celebrated here with traditional music and local customs. The village is built in terraces above the bay, offering wide views of the Zadar Channel. Due to its location, Zaglav is the well-suited base for visits to the nearby Telašćica Nature Park and Kornati National Park. Local restaurants serve freshly caught fish, lamb under the bell (peka), and high-quality olive oil. The surroundings are great for hikes through olive groves to hidden swimming coves where the sea is crystal clear.
