Kawkaban Fortress City (Yemen)

Weather…

Kawkaban is a fortified city in Yemen, located approximately 50 km northwest of Sanaa at an elevation of 2,800 meters. Built on a rocky ridge, it served as a strategic stronghold from the 11th century onward. Its thick stone walls and gates protected inhabitants from invasions. Inside the fortress are traditional Yemeni mud-brick houses, some up to five stories high. The city was a key trading post on the Frankincense Route. In the 16th century, it withstood multiple Ottoman sieges. The cisterns of Kawkaban collected rainwater for dry seasons. Today, the site is a cultural heritage in decline, though restoration projects are underway. The population within the walls has dwindled to a few hundred families.
