Mount Tabwemasana is the highest peak in Vanuatu, rising to an elevation of 1,879 meters (6,165 feet) on the rugged western coast of Espiritu Santo island. The mountain consists of two prominent peaks which, according to local mythology, are regarded as male and female, with the higher summit frequently shrouded in dense mountain mist. Its slopes are blanketed in pristine primary rainforest and rare cloud forests, hosting an extraordinary array of biodiversity, including numerous endemic plant and bird species. Due to its remote location and challenging terrain, the region remains largely untouched by modern development and is accessible only via multi-day expeditions starting from coastal villages. For the local people of nearby communities like Kerepua, the mountain holds deep spiritual significance and is revered as a sacred site. Scientifically, the area is of great importance for studying vertical ecological zones in tropical island environments and the preservation of rare montane flora. Reaching the summit is a significant physical undertaking that requires permission and guidance from the traditional indigenous landowners.
