Matevulu Blue Hole (Vanuatu)

Weather…

Matevulu Blue Hole is one of the largest and most accessible natural springs on Espiritu Santo. It is distinguished by its circular shape and the brilliant turquoise water that pushes upward from deep limestone layers. A unique feature of Matevulu is the massive banyan tree on its bank, whose vines are frequently used as natural swings. Geographically, the blue hole is connected to the ocean via the Matevulu River, making it possible to reach the spring by kayak from the sea. The surrounding ecosystem consists of ancient rainforest that provides shade and keeps the water temperature stable. The water's clarity allows for the observation of underwater flora and the numerous freshwater fish living within it without the need for diving equipment. Matevulu plays a significant role in local culture as a place of community and peace. Management by traditional landowners ensures that tourism does not compromise the delicate water quality. It is an important site for studying hydrological cycles on coral islands.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The Blue Hole is located on Espiritu Santo and can be reached either by car via a gravel road or - far more scenically - by canoe paddling up the Matevulu River.
📅
Best season
Visits are possible year-round, but on sunny days between May and September, the water glows in its most intense blue and features the best underwater visibility.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surroundings are flat and lined with mangroves; access to the water is via wooden jetties or small ladders, making entry very comfortable for swimmers.
🎒
What to bring
Bring snorkeling gear and water shoes, as the bottom can be slippery; insect repellent is highly recommended due to the nearby mangroves and persistent moisture.
🅿️
Parking
There is a small, shaded parking area right at the entrance to the Blue Hole site, where visitors can safely leave their rental cars for a small entrance fee.
⚠️
Safety
Watch out for submerged tree stumps while swimming and climb carefully on the rope swings; the current within the Blue Hole itself is usually negligible.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend about 2 to 3 hours on-site for swimming and relaxing, although you should plan for a half-day trip if you are arriving by canoe.
