South Santo Highlands (Vanuatu)

Weather…

The South Santo Highlands span the southern portion of Espiritu Santo island, representing one of Vanuatu's most topographically challenging landscapes. This region is characterized by steep mountain ridges, deep limestone caves, and pristine cloud forests that extend to high altitudes. Geologically, the area formed through a combination of tectonic uplift and a volcanic base, resulting in an extremely rugged surface. The highlands are home to some of Vanuatu's most remote settlements, where traditional ways of life remain largely unchanged. Biodiversity here is exceptional; it is a sanctuary for many rare and endangered species, including the Mountain Myzomela. Numerous clear streams and waterfalls originate in these mountains, flowing south toward the coast. For science, the region is of great interest due to its undiscovered cave systems and unique flora, while for adventurers, it remains one of the last great wildernesses of the Pacific.
