Estancia Narbona, located near Carmelo in the Colonia Department, is one of the oldest and most significant colonial structures in Uruguay. Founded around 1732 by Juan de Narbona, it functioned as a fortified agricultural estate, playing a crucial role in the early settlement of the region. The architecture is a remarkable example of Río de la Plata colonial construction, characterized by massive stone walls, a watchtower, and a chapel, highlighting its dual function as a production center and a defensive post against attacks. The estancia was a major producer of flour, wine, and other agricultural goods. Today, Estancia Narbona has been carefully restored and transformed into a luxury winery and hotel.
