Nueva Palmira is a strategically important port city in the Colonia Department, located at the confluence of the Uruguay River and the Río de la Plata. Founded in 1831, it quickly developed into a major commercial port due to its prime location along the Paraná-Paraguay Waterway. This waterway is a vital artery for transporting goods from the interior of South America, including Paraguay, Bolivia, and parts of Brazil and Argentina. The port of Nueva Palmira is one of the most important in the country, specializing in the handling of bulk cargo such as soybeans, cellulose, grains, and minerals. It features modern facilities and deep-water terminals capable of accommodating large ocean-going vessels. The city's economy is almost entirely dependent on port operations and the associated logistics and service companies. The city's name, 'New Palmyra,' was chosen in reference to the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, which was also a prominent commercial center. Despite its industrial character, the city has a pretty waterfront and some historic buildings dating back to its 19th-century foundation. It is also known as the 'Pearl of the Littoral'.
