Tarariras is a city in the Colonia Department whose foundation and growth are closely linked to the arrival of the railway in the early 20th century. Officially founded in 1919, the settlement developed around the train station, which served as a hub for transporting agricultural products from the surrounding region. The name 'Tarariras' is derived from a local stream that was abundant with tararira fish (Hoplias malabaricus). The city's economy is traditionally rooted in agriculture, particularly dairy production, which has earned it the nickname 'The Nut Capital' (Capital Tuerca), although this title is often more associated with its industrial activity. Besides dairy farming, grain cultivation and livestock raising are also of great importance. Tarariras is known for its strong community spirit and club culture. The city serves as a service center for a wide rural area, with schools, health services, and shops catering to the population's needs. Its urban planning is typical of Uruguayan cities of that era, with a central square around which the main buildings are clustered. Every year in October, it hosts the 'Expo Tarariras,' an important agricultural fair.
