Anchorena Park (Uruguay)

Weather…

Anchorena Park, located at the confluence of the San Juan River and the Río de la Plata in the Colonia Department, is the official summer residence of the President of Uruguay. This vast estate, spanning 1,369 hectares, was once the property of Argentine aristocrat Aarón de Anchorena. A passionate naturalist and traveler, Anchorena acquired the land in 1908 and transformed it into a botanical arboretum, importing over 200 species of trees and shrubs from around the world. The main building, of Norman style, was designed by architect Alejandro Christophersen. A prominent feature of the park is the 75-meter-high stone observation tower, which provides panoramic views of the estate and the river. In his will, Anchorena bequeathed the entire property to the Uruguayan state on the condition that it be preserved as a park and used as a residence for the head of state. Upon his death in 1965, the property passed to the state and has served this purpose ever since.
