Historic Quarter of Colonia (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Historic Quarter of Colonia del Sacramento, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, is an outstanding example of the fusion of Portuguese and Spanish colonial styles. Founded by the Portuguese in 1680 on the banks of the Río de la Plata, the city was a point of contention between the Spanish and Portuguese empires for over a century. This dual history is reflected in its urban planning: irregular, cobblestoned streets of Portuguese origin contrast with the wider, right-angled streets of Spanish design. The quarter preserves significant historical buildings such as the Basilica of the Most Holy Sacrament, considered the oldest church in Uruguay, and the lighthouse, built in 1857 on the ruins of the San Francisco Xavier convent. Its preserved fortifications and strategic location opposite Buenos Aires underscore the city's military importance during the colonial era. Today, the quarter is a well-preserved enclave that provides visitors an authentic journey into the past.
