Progreso is a city in the Canelones Department of southern Uruguay, located approximately 29 kilometers north of the capital, Montevideo. The city was officially founded on November 15, 1871, and its development is closely linked to the arrival of the railway, which played a crucial role in its economic and demographic boost. The railway line connected the agricultural production areas of the interior with the port of Montevideo, making Progreso an important logistics hub. Geographically, the city is situated in a region of gentle hills known for its fertile soils, which has made agriculture the mainstay of its economy. Viticulture, in particular, is of great importance, with numerous wineries in the area contributing to Uruguay's winemaking tradition. In addition to grapes, fruits and vegetables are also cultivated. In recent decades, Progreso has evolved into a dormitory town for Montevideo, with many residents commuting daily to the capital. Despite this transformation, the city maintains its quiet character and its close connection to the rural environment.
