Church of Christ the Worker (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Church of Cristo Obrero y Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, known as the Church of Christ the Worker, is an architectural masterpiece located in Estación Atlántida. Designed by the visionary engineer Eladio Dieste and completed in 1960, it is a prime example of his 'reinforced brick' technique. The church's structure is remarkable for its undulating walls and its nearly flat roof, also made of brick, which spans a wide, open interior space without the need for columns or beams. Dieste sought an economical yet aesthetically pleasing construction method, which he found in exploiting the structural possibilities of brick and mortar. Light filters into the interior through small, strategic openings made of onyx and colored glass, creating a spiritual atmosphere. In July 2021, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its innovative engineering and unique modernist design, recognizing its global importance.
