Atlántida is a popular coastal resort in the Canelones Department of Uruguay, located about 45 kilometers east of Montevideo. It is the center of the so-called Costa de Oro (Gold Coast), a chain of beaches and resorts along the Río de la Plata. Founded in the early 20th century by a group of doctors and intellectuals from Montevideo, Atlántida was conceived as an 'aristocratic seaside resort'. The city is known for its unique urban planning, with diagonal streets lined with pine and eucalyptus trees, and its distinctive architecture. A notable example is the parish church Cristo Obrero y Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, a modernist masterpiece by engineer Eladio Dieste, built in 1960. The beach at Atlántida is divided into two sections, the 'Playa Mansa' (calm beach) and the 'Playa Brava' (rough beach), offering different bathing conditions. During the summer, the city attracts thousands of tourists and has a lively atmosphere with numerous restaurants, casinos, and cultural activities. Out of season, Atlántida is a quiet residential town. Its cultural and social importance, combined with its natural beauty, makes it one of Uruguay's most important resorts.
