The city's name derives from a historical ford (paso) over the Arroyo Carrasco, a stream that marks the border between the Montevideo and Canelones departments. Its strategic location near Carrasco International Airport, Uruguay's main airport, has further enhanced its importance as a residential and commercial area. The city is well-connected by Avenida Giannattasio, one of the region's main arteries, which links it to Montevideo and the resorts of the Costa de Oro.
