💡 Tips
- The beaches here are much quieter than in Montevideo, making them great for long, relaxing weekend walks.
- Rent a bicycle to explore the Rambla (coastal promenade); it is flat, scenic, and very bike-friendly.
- Even in summer, the coastal wind can be strong, so always carry a light windbreaker in your bag.
- Keep in mind that many smaller shops observe a 'siesta' and close during the early afternoon hours.
🍽 Food
Traditional wood-fired barbecue. Try the local parrilladas (steakhouses) along Avenida Giannattasio.
A massive, iconic Uruguayan beef sandwich. Popular at local diners and food trucks near the mall.
The beloved herbal tea. Buy a thermos and some yerba at a supermarket, and sip it on the beach like a local.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A modern, large shopping mall complex for all your international brands and practical needs.
Street markets pop up on weekends; excellent for buying fresh vegetables, regional cheeses, and crafts.
A massive, forested park bordering the city. Convenient for picnics and escaping the coastal winds.
The wide, sandy coastline is practically deserted and incredibly peaceful early in the morning.

Ciudad de la Costa is a relatively new city in the Canelones Department of Uruguay, stretching along the coast of the Río de la Plata. It was formed from the fusion of several former seaside resorts (balnearios) such as Solymar, Lagomar, and Shangrilá. Its rapid growth began in the 1970s as urban sprawl from Montevideo shifted eastward. It was officially declared a city only on October 19, 1994, reflecting its swift development from a collection of holiday spots into a significant urban entity. Today, it is one of Uruguay's most populous cities, functioning primarily as a residential suburb for commuters working in the nearby capital, Montevideo. The city is characterized by long sandy beaches, low-density residential neighborhoods, and major infrastructure like the Carrasco International Airport, Uruguay's main airport. Its development represents a major demographic shift in Uruguay towards a suburban, coastal lifestyle.
