Isla de las Gaviotas (Uruguay)

Weather…

Isla de las Gaviotas, literally 'Island of the Gulls', is a small, rocky island in the Río de la Plata, located just off the coast of Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. Administratively, it belongs to the Montevideo Department. The island is uninhabited and has an area of only about 1.5 hectares. Its main importance lies in its role as a vital nesting and resting site for various species of seabirds, particularly the kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), which gives the island its name, as well as several species of cormorants and terns. The island's geology consists of Precambrian granite, typical of the coastal region. Due to its small size and the absence of mainland predators, it provides a safe nesting ground. The island is a well-known landmark in the Bay of Montevideo, visible from many points along the Rambla. Access to the island is restricted to protect the nesting bird colonies, highlighting its ecological significance. It is part of the 'Humedales de Santa Lucía' protected area.
