Zviahel Castle (Ukraine)

Weather…

Zviahel Castle, located in the modern-day city of Novohrad-Volynskyi, was founded in the early 16th century by Prince Konstanty Ostrogski. The fortress was strategically built on a high rocky bank overlooking the Sluch River to guard the Volhynian region against Crimean Tatar incursions. Originally a wooden structure, it was rebuilt in stone during the mid-16th century, incorporating Renaissance bastions and thick defensive walls. Throughout its history, the castle served as a significant administrative center, but it sustained severe damage during the Khmelnytsky Uprising in 1648. In the late 20th century, specifically during the 1980s and 1990s, parts of the fortifications, including a defensive tower and sections of the wall, were reconstructed to preserve the town's heritage. Today, the castle ruins and the reconstructed tower serve as a prominent cultural landmark, offering scenic views of the river valley and housing historical markers of the Ostrogski era.
