Stone Village (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Kaminne Selo Geological Reserve, often referred to as the Stone Village, is located in the Korosten District of the Zhytomyr Oblast. Spanning approximately 15 hectares, this site features a collection of massive granite boulders scattered throughout a dense forest, resembling a petrified settlement. Geologists attribute these formations to glacial deposits or the long-term weathering of ancient crystalline rock from the Ukrainian Shield. Local folklore is rich with myths, including stories of a village turned to stone by divine intervention, with one boulder famously bearing a mark known as the Footprint of God. Established as a nature reserve in 1967, it remains a key destination for ecological research and tourism in the Polissya region. The site preserves a unique microclimate that supports rare mosses and lichens.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This natural wonder is located in the forest near the village of Rudnya-Zamyslovetska in the Zhytomyr region. Access is mostly via unpaved forest roads, so a vehicle with decent ground clearance is advisable.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn during dry weather conditions. After heavy rains, the forest roads can become very muddy and difficult to navigate for standard passenger cars.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is largely flat and forested, with massive granite boulders scattered like houses across the landscape. The paths between the stones are natural and may feature roots or loose leaf litter underfoot.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots are necessary due to the uneven forest floor and often slippery rocks. Bring plenty of insect repellent against ticks and mosquitoes, as well as provisions, as there are no shops nearby.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors can leave their vehicles in a small clearing at the edge of the forest or in the nearby village. Ensure you do not block any forest tracks and keep access clear for emergency or forestry vehicles.
⚠️
Safety
Keep your bearings to avoid losing your way in the forest, as GPS signals can be unreliable. Caution is advised when climbing on the rocks, especially if moss has made the surfaces slippery after rainfall.
⏱️
Time needed
Plan for about 2 to 3 hours to explore and photograph the most interesting rock formations at a relaxed pace. Including travel to and from main roads, you should allow for half a day for this unique excursion.
