Korosten is a city with over a millennium of history, located in the Zhytomyr Oblast along the Uzh River. In ancient times, known as Iskorosten, it served as the powerful capital of the Drevlian Slavic tribe. The city is famous for its fierce resistance against the Kievan Rus; in 945, the Drevlians killed Prince Igor here, leading to a legendary retaliatory siege in 946 by Princess Olga, who reportedly burned the city to the ground using birds. Rebuilt over the centuries, it emerged as a strategic fortress in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The industrial era arrived in 1902 with the completion of the Kyiv-Kovel railway, turning Korosten into one of Ukraine's vital transportation hubs. Today, its economy is anchored by the extraction of premium 'Korosten granite' and heavy machinery manufacturing. A major historical site is the 'Object Skelya,' a secret underground military bunker carved into granite during the 1930s. The city also hosts the International Dranyky (Potato Pancake) Festival, celebrating local culinary traditions that attract gourmets from across the country.
