Shepetivka is a major industrial city and a crucial railway junction in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast of western Ukraine. First mentioned in 1594 as a possession of the Ostrogski family, it served for centuries as a center for trade and handicrafts in the historic Volhynia region. Its rapid industrialization took off in the mid-19th century with the opening of a sugar refinery in 1846 and the arrival of the railway in 1873. These developments positioned Shepetivka as a vital logistics hub connecting central Ukraine with the west. The city gained literary fame as the setting for part of Nikolai Ostrovsky's novel 'How the Steel Was Tempered,' as the author spent his formative years here. Today, Shepetivka is home to significant food processing plants, woodworking industries, and mechanical engineering firms. Geographically, the city is located among expansive forests and sits at a key crossroads of rail lines leading to Lviv, Kyiv, and Ternopil. Despite its industrial focus, it maintains cultural landmarks such as the Saint George Church and local history museums.
